5 Tips for an Easy Summer Shrimp Boil

I love a good summer party, and last weekend we had our friends over to enjoy a Southern-style low country shrimp boil.  My husband is from Charlotte, North Carolina, and when I moved out there, I learned that low country boils are a way of life.  I missed them when we moved back out West, so we started having our own boil parties.  Having the pot out on the patio and having your friends participate in the creation of the meal makes your party a memorable experience.  Use shrimp, crab or lobster…whatever shellfish your tribe likes.  But make sure to follow my five “must-have” tips for any summer party to make it a real success. S’mores Frappuccino with Nutella Marshmallows

The line in the Starbucks drive-thru has been horrendous the last few weeks because the suns out and everyone and their mother is ordering a frappuccino.  I have strict guidelines for what I think should be allowed to be ordered in the drive-thru: no ordering for more than four people at a time, no ice cream or special order items (mainly at Burgerville), and no fancy coffee drinks at Starbucks.  If you have the time to wait for that stuff, you should go inside and let the rest of us order our kids meal or tall latte and get on our way. Agave Lemon French 75 Cocktail

I used to tune in on the reg to watch Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee on Food Network.  While I thought she was a little over the top, I LOVED that she always had a cocktail time.  Back then, our Friday night usual was enjoying a cocktail recipe from her show while hanging on the back deck with friends.  Oh the days before kids!  A French 75 cocktail reminds me of a drink Sandra Lee would chug while decorating her “tablescape” and whipping up some dish in her microwave.  This is not her recipe, but I give her credit for the inspiration. Elderflower Moscato Cocktail

For all my sweet drink loving lushes out there, this cocktail is for you.  If you don’t know, Moscato is a frizzante style wine which means it’s bubbly but not super bubbly like Champagne. It’s made in Italy from the Muscat grape and you can usually identify it because of its grapey smell and sweet taste.  It’s low in alcohol around 6% and makes for an excellent brunch wine. (more…)

Amaretto Butterscotch Coffee Cocktail

Last week was all about Bourbon, and this week is all about Amaretto.  Amaretto is my favorite liqueur, especially when combined with coffee and butterscotch; the aroma is warm, sweet, and all holiday.  I first served this cocktail a few years ago at Christmas where my boozy drink loving sister and I enjoyed several.  It’s what sisters do, right? Rosemary Prosecco Mule for the Holidays

It’s Mule week here at The Happy Lush and this Rosemary Prosecco Mule is so good!  My previous post used Bourbon as the base where this recipe is all about the bubbly.  Prosecco makes a terrific bubbly to use in cocktails for several reasons: it’s reasonably priced, has a fruitier flavor which works well in cocktails, and the bubbles are festive. Festive Cranberry Bourbon Mule

I love the holidays!  It’s the time of year when we can eat, drink, and be merry and not worry about it.  I feel I am most creative this time of year too. Perhaps it’s because I don’t hold back worrying about what I eat or how much I should be drinking.  I’m all in right now and the recipe below certainly plays to that!  Tim and I were enjoying some drinks at the hotel bar last weekend while we were in Seattle; he ordered a blackberry Bourbon mule, and after I stole a few sips, I decided I needed to make a cranberry version.
